How to Manage Your Stress

By Sara Butler

As much as you might wish it, life isn’t a stress-free experience. Humans just aren’t designed that way; once upon a time, your stress response saved your ancestors from saber-tooth tigers! But in today’s world, too much stress can have a negative impact on your health and wellness, so you need to take steps to manage your stress. Here are a few tips to help get you started!

Identify the Stress

If you want to manage your stress, you first have to figure out what’s causing it. What things trigger your stress response? When do you feel overwhelmed? If you can figure out when you’re more likely to get stressed, then you can take some steps to address it.

Can You Eliminate the Source of Stress?

You may not be able to get rid of all the sources of stress in your life because sometimes you’re stuck with a boss or a job you don’t really like, but there are usually some sources of stress you can eliminate. After you’ve identified the things that serve as stress triggers for you, then you should take a look at the things that are realistic to eliminate from your life. Only you can determine if a source of stress is valuable to you or not, so make a list of pros and cons if you have to and weed out the stuff you can.

Accept What You Can’t Change

The things in your life that cause you stress that you can’t change need to be neutralized to the largest extent possible. So, if you get stressed about your finances or when you’re driving to and from work every day, then take a look at the ways you may be able to change the way you react to it. You have to accept that they’re something you need to learn to deal with and then look at how you can deal with the stress they cause you more constructively.

Try Some Relaxation Techniques

If you know what situations stress you out, then you can employ techniques to deal with the stress when it begins to mount. This way, you can do something about the stress before it becomes an issue and starts to impact your health. You should look at things to help you deal with stress such as meditation, breathing exercises, or physical exercise.
