Are You Really Hungry?

By Sara Butler

Hunger is a funny thing because many people eat when they think they’re hungry but may be confusing the feeling with something else. As much as it sounds like common sense to only eat when you’re hungry, this isn’t always the easiest thing to accomplish. So, how do you know when you’re really hungry or when you’re just really into that new Netflix show? Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you figure it out.

When Did You Last Eat?

If you’ve eaten breakfast recently but then feel like you could easily look at one of your co-workers and see a giant turkey leg instead, you’re not alone. A lot of people feel ravenous in the morning not long after they’ve eaten breakfast. But this probably has more to do with what you’re eating rather than when you last ate. If you’re eating the right kinds of foods, then you should have a good two to three hours before that co-worker turns into a turkey leg.

Try breakfasts that will sustain you for longer. Make sure they have good fats, fiber, and protein in order to keep you feeling satisfied. Before you go wild and become a cannibal, consider keeping good snacks at your desk such as nuts.

Are You Hangry?

Eating-based emotions are considered bad. Many people get really crabby when they’re hungry, but you should really take your feelings as a valid reason to eat. Stomach rumbles, crankiness, or headaches all mean you need to get some food pronto. Preferably before you lose all your friends.

Does Water Help?

When you’re feeling hungry, try drinking water. It’s quite common for people to mistake thirst for hunger, so down a glass of water and if you’re still hungry after 10 minutes, then it was meant to be. Go get something to eat! If you’re not hungry anymore, then you have your answer!

Are You Stressed

Stress eating is a real phenomenon! You just want to munch on something when you’re feeling stressed out, but remember that food will never solve this problem. If you’re feeling sad, anxious, and in need of emotional support, then you should do something else other than raiding the fridge. Try a walk, some deep breathing, meditation, or listening to your favorite song.

Hunger is a physical state, but it's also a state of mind. Be aware of it so you can eat only when you're actually hungry!
