Don't Drive Your Back Into Pain
By Donna Stark
Whether you are hitting the road for that epic trip across the country or you have a job that requires you to drive all day, spending time behind the wheel can be a real pain in the neck ... or back ... or hips ... or maybe even in your knees. And that's because most car seats are made for those quick runs to the store or that short trip to a neighboring city. They aren't really made to support your body on those extra-long rides you take for work or to see your family a couple of states over. However, there are some things that you can do to counteract the pain and discomfort that may arise from those poorly-designed seats in your car. Let's go over a few of them here.
Create Your Comfort
Before you pull that seat belt across your chest, you need to make sure that you are going to be comfortable while driving, so take a few minutes and go over the following.
- Take your wallet out of your back pocket
- Place your cell phone to the side
- Make sure everything you need is within reach
- Wear comfortable clothing and shoes
- Adjust your seat so you don't have to reach for the pedals or the steering wheel
- Adjust your mirrors so you don't have to bend or twist your body to use them
- Sit upright
Bring a 'Back' Backpack
The health of your spine is important to think about before you leave for a long drive, so consider packing the following items that can help to keep your drive pain-free.
- A lumbar support pillow
- A towel that you can be rolled up and placed behind your back
- Instant heating pads
- Something for pain relief
- Plenty of water
Take a Break (or Two!)
It is never a good idea to drive long distances without taking some breaks to get out and stretch. Taking a short walk or stretching for a few minutes will increase circulation which can reduce the risk of stiffness, soreness, and pain, while also helping you feel more alert! Try to incorporate a quick stop at least every hour or two while on the road.
