Don't Stop Walking Because It Is Cold Outside!
By Donna Stark
There are a lot of things fighting against you during the colder months of the year. Things that may successfully tempt you into staying inside when you should actually be heading outdoors for your daily walk. Your couch, the TV, and those unbelievably soft and cozy blankets always seem to be calling your name, don't they? And they make it hard for you to face the frigid temperatures and dreary days. But, if there is one thing that shouldn't be pushed aside, it's your physical activity. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to make your winter walks more comfortable. Take a look.
Wear the Right Clothes
It's important to dress for the elements and there is no better way to do so than to add some warm, soft layers to what you are wearing. Layers are crucial for your overall comfort, but they need to be in a specific order.
- Moisture-wicking base layer - Shirts, turtlenecks, and leggings (avoid wearing items made from cotton)
- Insulating layer - Fleece pullovers, flannels, and vests
- Outer layer - Jackets, raincoats, and windbreakers
Also, don't forget to grab your hat, scarves, and gloves before you head out the door!
Warm Up
Before you step into the freezing temperatures, warm your body up first! Take the time to engage in some light dynamic stretches, such as arm circles, lunges, and leg swings. A good dynamic stretch session will ignite your energy, get your blood pumping, and ease muscle tension.
Choose a Good Time
The lack of sunlight and the drop in temperature may keep you from enjoying an early morning or late evening walk, but that doesn't mean you should completely avoid exercise. Just alter your schedule so you can enjoy as much daylight as you can. Take your walks later in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun has had the chance to warm things up a bit. Being out in the sun will definitely make a difference in how your days go.
Staying Active During the Winter
It's true. Even the best of us struggle to stay committed to our daily walks during the long, cold days of winter. Long gone are the warm summer mornings and cool fall afternoons. Now, we are faced with temperatures that chill us to the bone. Thankfully though, there are many different things we can do to stay active and most of them are quite easy to implement!
