Apples Are the Perfect Pick for Fall

By Donna Stark

They're sweet, delicious, and easy to eat, but the most encouraging fact about apples is that they are known to keep the doctors away. Now, whether that is true or not is yet to be determined, but you can't deny all of the health benefits that come from adding more apples to your diet. And with the cold and flu season right around the corner, there's nothing that sounds better than that!

The Perfect Pick

With all the varieties to choose from, finding the apples you like and incorporating them into your diet shouldn't be difficult! But how do you choose? What do you look for? Here are some tips on how to pick the perfect apple and where to store them at home.

  • Uses - Research which apple is recommended for your intended use. Are you going to eat them raw, bake them, turn them into applesauce, or squeeze them dry and collect their juices? There is a right variety for every use so choose wisely. It does make a difference.
  • Appearance - Once you have decided on a variety, select the apples that are firm and smooth. Avoid any that are discolored or soft, or those that have bruises, dents, or decay.
  • Storage - Once you bring your apples home, store them in the coldest part of your refrigerator. If you happened to miss a bad one in the bunch, remove it from the group as it can cause the others to decay faster.

Enjoying Your Fruit

Now that you know how to pick the perfect apples and store them, it's time to sit back and enjoy, but before you do so, make sure you give them a good wash. Keep the skin on if you can too, because by removing the skin of the apple, you will be eliminating a great source of fiber in your diet.

Speaking of diet, let's take a look at the many ways that you can incorporate more apples into your days, other than eating them as they are, that is. Here are some delicious suggestions.

  • Homemade applesauce - Applesauce can be a lot healthier if you make it yourself because you get to control the amount of sugar added
  • Toppings for everything - From oatmeal to sandwiches to salads to dessert, apples are one of the sweetest toppings you can find
  • Surprise ingredient - When you toss apples into your savory dishes (pork, chicken, and roasted vegetables), everyone will be pleasantly surprised

The Taste of Fall

Increase your nutrition, satisfy your sweet tooth, and keep the doctor away by adding more apples to your diet. It's the sweetest and best way to bring the official taste of fall into your home this season!
