Managing the Stress of a Schedule Change
By Brandi Goodman
The school season is just around the corner. Whether online schooling or in-person instruction is your choice, you'll still have to get used to the schedule change that comes with the decision. It's often difficult to switch over to a completely new way of doing things -- and at new times. Manage the stress of a schedule change with some tips in mind.
Set a Sleep Routine
If you don't already have one, now's the time to set a sleep routine. You need to be sure you're getting plenty of rest each night so you can wake up well-rested and feeling less stressed about your day. Even if you currently have one, you may need to set it back a little if an early start time is part of your new schedule. Eight hours is the typical goal for most people.
Find Ways to Relax
Letting yourself think over and over about how stressful this change will be isn't good for your health. You need to find ways to relax so you can clear your mind for a while and get the stressful thoughts out of your head. Watch your favorite funny movie. Spend time laughing with a friend. Play a game with your partner. Read a book. There's lots of options that can help you relax and unwind.
Maintain a Healthy Diet
Eating can be a coping mechanism for stress. You don't want to find yourself grabbing unhealthy snacks and overindulging at the dinner table. Be sure to maintain a healthy diet so your brain and body are both fueled and able to handle the stress that is bound to cause some tension within it. Fruits and vegetables need to be on your snack list, rather than junk food.
Focus on Positive Thoughts
Thinking negatively about the situation will only lead to more stress. You need to do your best to focus on the positive thoughts that come. "Once school starts, I'll be able to spend time with friends again." "I'll get to learn new things and take classes I enjoy." Think about the good that can come with this schedule change and what you'll gain from it. It will ease the stress on your shoulders.
A schedule change doesn't only apply to the school year. A new job may require you to work different hours than your previous one did. No matter the reason for the change, finding ways to manage the stress that comes with it is important for your well-being.
