How Men Can Reduce Stress

By Sara Butler

Stress is just a part of life, and it can be found everywhere. From your job to your family to your health, it can be a difficult task to control the stressful situations in your life. The trouble is if you don’t find a way to control stress it will control you, and eventually lead to health problems. The good news is there are some easy and effective things you can do to help manage stress in your life.

How Stress Impacts Your Body

Both men and women release stress hormones, called epinephrine and cortisol. The hormones cause your heart rate to increase, which then increases your blood pressure and blood sugar levels. That’s why chronic stress can lead to health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Men and women both release oxytocin as a way to fight the stress response, but men are at a disadvantage since they don’t release as much of it as women. This is precisely why it’s important for men to take measures to control the stress in their lives.

You can’t eliminate stress in your life, but you can take steps to manage its impact on your emotions and your health.

Get Some Exercise

Regular exercise can help you to release tension and blow off some steam. It reduces the amount of stress in your life too. So, try joining a recreational sports league or get a regular basketball game together with friends. That will not only get you some exercise but add some much needed social support to help you deal with stress in your life.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is one of the biggest factors in your overall health, and if you’re not getting enough good quality rest then stress will take an even bigger toll on you. Getting rest will allow you to recharge and mentally prepare to handle new challenges. You might want to try to limit your alcohol and caffeine intake since both of those things can mess with your sleep quality and quantity.

Eat Right

A balanced diet with enough fresh fruits and vegetables will help you to feel energized and keep your body functioning at its best. It might be easy to go for fast food or processed foods, especially if you’re busy, but that will only leave you feeling lethargic and won’t provide your body with the nutrition it needs.

Stress is a difficult thing to deal with, but if you make a commitment to recognize stress and take steps to reduce it in your life, it doesn’t have to take over. Follow these suggestions and see how it impacts your stress levels!
