Dr. Ryan Frees became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of healthcare providers in Tempe, AZ in 2020 and in 2023 he became clinic director and lead chiropractor at the York Road clinic, continuing the work he finds so rewarding.
“I love educating patients about the true power of regular chiropractic care; taking them from where they are, dealing with pain in some area of their spine, to elevated levels of bodily function once the pain has subsided,” he says. “I love delivering a patient's first ever chiropractic adjustment and seeing the reaction on their face. I believe I'm changing their lives with how I not only adjust them, but how I explain chiropractic to them.”
Dr. Frees was a pre-med student at Towson State University and earned a Doctorate of Chiropractic at Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, Calif. After college, he continued studying both physical and mental human performance. He chose the chiropractic field after his own experience with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis from the age of 7. Doctors put him on a heavy regimen of baby aspirin for more than a year which reduced pain so he could return to sports but left him with chronic heartburn. As a college freshman, his heartburn became more acute and he developed 10 ulcers in his stomach and esophagus. Dr. Frees also had compression fractures in his lower back. In his junior year of pre-med he met a student who encouraged him to seek treatment from the chiropractor for whom he worked. Within a few months not only had Dr. Frees’ lower back pain subside, but so did his chronic heartburn. He was able to get off the medications that he had been taking for two years and that his gastroenterologist said he would be on for the rest of his life.
One of his most memorable experiences as a chiropractor was working with professional athletes from the Diamondbacks Major League Baseball franchise and the Coyotes in the National Hockey League. “I was able to assist in their chiropractic care and actually pick their brains about what it takes to become an elite professional athlete, which was what my son wanted to be when he grew up,” Dr. Frees says.
Working at the York Road clinic, Dr. Frees is going back to where his chiropractic experience started. “I’m a couple of miles from the campus and want to have the same effect on my community as I experienced while going to Towson State University,” he says.
Dr. Frees plays beach volleyball at the Inner Harbor and has competed in tournaments in Arizona, California, and Mexico. Golf is a passion he’s had since the age of 9 and he began playing pickleball “way before it was cool,” he says. “I also like to challenge my comfort zone by doing open mic stand-up comedy once a year.”
The advice Dr. Frees likes to give to others is “Come to the Joint York Road for an educational, lighthearted, transformative experience on your road from pain to peak physical performance.”
