Can You Have a Problem Without Pain?

By Sara Butler

Many people think that pain is the first sign of a problem, but that’s actually not the case. Pain is usually the last symptom you will experience to indicate something might be wrong with your spinal alignment or nervous system. Your chiropractor is trained to hunt down issues that may eventually lead to pain, which is part of what makes regular chiropractic care so important. Here’s what you need to know about what pain means when it comes to your spine.

The Facts

A study in the European Spine Journal found that in people with no previous or current neck or back pain:

  • 87 percent suffered from disc protrusion
  • 73 percent suffered from disc degeneration
  • 63 percent suffered from a disc tear

The people in the study were not currently in pain, yet upon closer examination had conditions that will eventually lead to back or neck pain. This study merely highlights what chiropractors already know – pain is the last thing that often shows up at the party when something is going wrong with your spine or nervous system.

In many people, symptoms are not necessary to be diagnosed with an underlying problem. When you neglect the health of your spine or nervous system simply because you aren’t in any physical pain, then you may be setting yourself up for bigger problems down the road.

The Healthy Spine

Your spine plays an important role in all of your body functions as well as your overall health. This is mainly due to the fact that the spine is the house in which the central nervous system lives, so if it’s not structurally sound, your central nervous system won’t be functioning optimally. Every thought, feeling, function and action is the direct result of your central nervous system, so you can see how it plays such a big role in your health.

Your spine needs evaluation by a chiropractor so they may provide maintenance over the course of your life in order to maintain proper spinal function. Your chiropractor plays a proactive role in helping you to maintain your spine and nervous system. You have to remember that your chiropractor doesn’t fix you -they simply help your body to do what it was made to do, heal itself. In the pursuit of this, they can help you to avoid reaching the point of pain – your body’s last line of defense.

If you have questions about the health of your spine, discuss it with your chiropractor during your next visit to The Joint Chiropractic.
