Make Room for Real Food!

By Sara Butler

The kitchen can be the downfall of a many a healthy-minded eater. You may want to chuck everything out of your pantry and start all over again in order to restock with real food that can help you reach your health goals. Well, what’s stopping you? If you’re unsure where to start to make over your refrigerator and pantry, here are a few tips to help you get started.

Unhealthy Non-Perishables

You need to part with these things, pronto. You may be sabotaging your promise to yourself to eat better before you’ve even begun by keeping unhealthy foods in your pantry. Go through your cabinets and toss out anything that has artificial food colorings and preservatives, are high in sugar or sodium, or have a list of ingredients so long they make your eyes cross. Be tough with yourself and get rid of anything that isn’t healthy or you know you and your family won’t use.

Now that you have a blank canvas to start with, you can begin to restock the shelves with healthy choices. Common healthy pantry staples you may want to consider include:

  • Olive, walnut, or coconut oil
  • Whole grains such as oatmeal, quinoa, and brown rice
  • Canned (but low sodium) goods such as tuna, broth, olives, tomatoes, and vinegar
  • Dried beans
  • Local honey
  • Sea salt

Attack the Refrigerator and Freezer

With your pantry ready to go, it’s time to move on to the refrigerator and the freezer. There may be stuff lurking in there from two presidential administrations ago. Apply the same strategies to clean it out as you used for your pantry. Go over each and every label, throwing out anything that doesn’t fit in with your fitness goals.

Restock the Refrigerator

You’re almost done! Stock up on wholesome and healthy foods for your refrigerator such as:

  • Fresh herbs
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Fresh fruit
  • Hummus
  • Hot sauce
  • Salsa
  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • Nut butter
  • Whole grain bread
  • Frozen fruits and vegetables
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Lean meats

Now that you’ve got your kitchen fully stocked and ready to go, you can kick off your healthy eating habits right! All you need to do now is to start planning and preparing fresh meals for yourself and your family! Just follow these tips to get you off on the right foot and discover how easy healthy eating is once your kitchen is stocked and ready.
