Why You Should Walk After Dinner

By Donna Stark

What is your normal routine after enjoying a satisfying dinner? Do you clean up the kitchen and then head to the couch for a night of TV? Or do you try to give your body a little extra movement before you turn in for the night? If movement is the way you go, that's great! But if it's not, you may want to consider doing so. Why? Because it will do your body some good! Of course, that doesn't mean you need to put on your running shoes and hit the roads for miles and miles. Just a simple walk around your neighborhood will do the trick.

Why You Should Walk After Dinner

There are a lot of good reasons why you should take an evening stroll after your dinner every night. You can chat with neighbors, enjoy some peace and quiet, and watch the sun set over the horizon, but the best reason is that it will improve your overall health and wellness. Here's how.

  • Aids in digestion - Want to do your stomach a favor? A quick walk around the block will help your body digest the food you have just eaten and can even reduce some of your bloating.
  • Regulates blood sugar level - Do you have trouble maintaining a healthy blood sugar level? Walking can help balance things out!
  • Reduces stress - Fresh air and a beautiful sunset, there's no better way to relax and reduce your stress than spending time enjoying the beauty that Mother Nature provides.
  • Supports quality sleep - Have trouble falling asleep some nights? The walk you take down the street and back will help you sleep better.

Changing Your Nighttime Routine

Now that you know how walking can benefit your health, it's time to get started! But before you do, take a look at the following tips that are sure to make your walks much easier.

  • Pace - Don't turn this into an intense workout. A light to moderate pace is all you need.
  • Clothing - Be sure to wear comfortable, reflective clothing. If you don't have reflective clothing, carry a flashlight with you.
  • Shoes - Make sure you are wearing sneakers or walking shoes that offer plenty of support and traction. Avoid wearing open-toed sandals or flip-flops.
  • Phone - If you do have a cellphone, bring it along. You never know when an accident may occur.

You Can Eat and Walk for Better Health!

Walking is good for you at any time during the day, but it's even better for your body after you finish a meal. So, go ahead and fill up on your favorite foods, but resist the temptation to stay sitting once you are done. Instead, lace up your shoes and get moving!
