How You Speak to (and Treat) Yourself Matters

By Amy Silva

Having a positive self-image doesn't come naturally to everyone. Luckily, having positive habits that bring joy can begin to change how one views oneself. Health isn't only physical; it also has to do with emotional health and mental well-being. Self-care, self-esteem and self-control all come into play when wanting to change a negative self-image.

Self-Care

Self-care should be a part of everyone's daily routine to help melt the day's stress away and recharge for the next day. For some, that may mean a hot shower or indulging in a favorite dessert. For others it could be a cup of tea or exercise. It looks different for everyone, but self-care is about doing the little things that bring peace and invoke a sense of calm in what can be a chaotic world. It's not just about doing physical things; it could also be avoiding people or news that bring down good moods.

Self-Esteem

What a person thinks can have a positive or negative impact on them. Speaking words of encouragement and treating themselves how they treat others is a good start. When a person feels down and like they aren't good enough, it can begin to affect their relationships as well as other areas of their lives. Repeating positive affirmations and doing plenty of activities that bring happiness can help increase confidence and put insecurities to rest. Being social can also assist in having a positive self-image. Being lonely may lead to negative feelings about oneself and being around others can have the opposite effect.

Self-Control

There are those of us who have a difficult time being disciplined in certain areas of our lives. Self-control comes by being mindful of our actions. Not being able to say "no" to cake, or overspending too often, are some examples of not having self-control. It's not always easy to avoid things we enjoy that are not-so-positive in nature, but making small changes or doing something else entirely when in the mood to overindulge in an unhealthy habit may help turn bad habits into good ones. Consider going for a walk to stop thinking about cake or commit to only having one piece on weekends. Overspending while online shopping isn't difficult to do. Perhaps having a set budget or only shopping in-person and avoiding online spending altogether will help.

Feeling drained mentally or emotionally may cause physical symptoms in some cases that can take a toll on overall health. Having a positive self-image can result in being happier and having a more positive overall health.
