Ready, Set, Go! 7 Ways to Get Moving Right Now

If you are determined to be out there moving every day, here are some tips to make it happen. Often good intentions get us almost to the door, but not always out!

As we move into spring, it's annoying to miss good fitness opportunities. We know exercise keeps our spirits up and our weight down. It also builds energy and resistance to disease and illness.  Here are some almost foolproof ways to stay active from Memorial Healthcare. See what you think.

Do what you love - Over time it is tempting to treat regular routines almost like work. When we lose the spontaneity of doing something we really enjoy, the battle is lost. Each time becomes a "must do" daily task. Instead, hone in on activities that you really love like shooting hoops, playing soccer or volleyball, sailing, dancing or hiking in the wilderness. Selecting the right stuff will practically guarantee you will be out there doing it.

Figure out what you want to get - As you take a close look at your plans to be more active, make a target list of the things you want to accomplish.

Start tracking your progress - Use your phone to track what you did each day, for how long, and how it went. If you are developing new fitness plans with your family, consider a family bulletin board to track each person's progress.

Round up support - If you need a push to get out for that early morning walk, enlist a fellow neighbor, co-worker or family member to join you. If you are trying to activate the whole family pin down activities that will be joint efforts like walking the dog, heading to the park before dinner, or doing a community class to learn a new sport.

Turn up the volume - Keep changing your playlist, pulling in all of your favorites, and returning to the most upbeat versions that you can find.

Celebrate your victories - As one week slips into another, check your progress and give credit where it is due. If it's a family matter, head out for ice cream or new hats or T-shirts for everybody. When you hit a month of good reports, reward yourself and your cohorts with a special party. Take pictures, make speeches, and discuss plans for more ways to keep on moving!
