Chiropractic Care for Shingles
By Sara Butler
You have a 20 to 30 percent chance of experiencing shingles at some point in your adult life, according to the Centers for Disease Control. As you age, your chances of contracting it only go up. Fortunately for you, chiropractic care can help. Here are a few ways in which chiropractic care can help you recover quicker and maybe even experience less pain if you get the shingles.
What Causes Shingles?
Shingles are caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, so it naturally shares some of the same symptoms. People with shingles develop a rash somewhere on their body. You could have a rash on your face, your back or even your trunk. The rash is different from the chicken pox because it produces very painful, itchy bumps in a pattern across your skin that follow a specific nerve pathway, plus the area can stay painful long after the rash goes away.
Speed Your Recovery Time
When you have had the chickenpox, the virus can lie dormant in your spinal nerves for years. A misalignment in your spine may trigger this virus to reactivate, causing you to develop shingles. That is one of the many reasons why seeing your chiropractor regularly for spinal adjustments is so important.
The adjustments done by your chiropractor can correct any subluxations in your spine, and that same technique is used to help your chiropractor treat an outbreak of the shingles. When your spine is aligned and free from interference, then it improves the communication between your central nervous system and the rest of your body. When your central nervous system is able to work at its best, then the rest of your body will be working optimally as well, including your immune system. A healthy immune system works more efficiently to help you recover from the shingles faster.
Catch It Early
One of the classic signs of shingles is pain in the affected area before a rash develops. This pain starts near the midline of your body, your spine, and can extend to your chest or kidneys. This pain can be quite severe, so it’s important if you experience it to seek help as soon as possible so treatment can begin. The faster you get treatment, the less chance the shingles have to take hold and the less pain you will have to tolerate.
