Spinach Steps Up Again As Brain Food


I have been a spinach fan forever, doing my best to blend spinach into my meals to collect its many vitamins, nutrients and health powers. And I am always amazed when I review its long list of talents.

Some researchers endorse spinach for cancer and diabetes management and fighting asthma. Other researchers cite spinach as a prostate cancer fighter, good way to keep blood pressure low and builder of bone and muscle strength. Spinach fiber is also a good constipation fighter. That’s a lot of health potential to pack into one vegetable.

But now researchers are saying spinach may keep the brain young too.

An article in the Telegraph spotted research from Rush University in Chicago that says spinach may make the brain as much as 11 years younger.

A 10 year study of 950 seniors and their diets reported eating leafy greens such as spinach or kale once or twice a day significantly improved brain alertness. With this kind of positive brain research you can be sure there will be more to explore its skills against dementia.

So where does this leave us on using spinach?

Many of us already opt for fresh spinach salads and slip spinach in with our sautéed chicken or salmon for dinner. Spinach is also easy to add to soups, casseroles and salads. Of course spinach and feta cheese pies or spinach and kale mixed with artichokes in a Greek yogurt dip works well too. Check out sites like and you will find a whole string of tempting spinach recipes.

If you find canned or frozen spinach has a strong taste try fresh to find a lighter taste. Veteran cooks also suggest using cheese and butter in creamed spinach dishes to tame the stronger taste. With fresh spinach, be sure to thoroughly wash it. There have been food alerts on shipments of fresh spinach. If you garden at all, this might be an excellent time to start a spring planter box of fresh spinach, along with your pots of rosemary and basil.

But whatever you decide, don’t ignore spinach. If it does not help you in one way, it certainly will in some other way. I can hardly wait to see what researchers will turn up next to add to its credits and prompt us to put it on our shopping lists.
