How to Achieve Overall Wellness
By Debra Rodzinak
Most chiropractors want their patients to have an overall wellness that intercedes every part of their lives. Obtaining a complete and overarching view of your total health is a step in the right direction toward having a healthy spine. Often, chiropractors will suggest incorporating physiological therapeutic measures that will add to the overall benefit of chiropractic care. These include:
Heat and Cold Therapy
Alternating between heat and ice therapy helps back pain. When switched out every 10 to 15 minutes, the effects of heat and cold therapy is amazing. The numbing effect of the ice pack helps reduce swelling. Then, the soothing heat of a hot water bottle or heating pad promotes the flow of blood to the affected area, which promotes faster healing.
Healthy Diet
Diet used to mean starving yourself until you dropped weight. In today’s world, a healthy diet includes eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, and healthy meats that keep the body running efficiently. An added benefit to a healthy diet is that you will probably shed a few pounds, which takes added stress off your back and joints.
Exercise
Chiropractors are the best resource to use for finding exercises that focus on stretching and strengthening the muscles of the back that support the spine. Some muscles may need more focus depending on your particular need. Building up these muscles can help stabilize your back and spine leading to overall better health.
Massage
Massaging the soft tissues is known to improve circulation, encourage healing, and reduce swelling and inflammation that go hand and hand with back pain. Not only that, but a massage can help you slow down, relax, and have an overall healthier outlook. Massage also prepares the body for an adjustment by relaxing the muscles surrounding the injured or misaligned area, allowing the chiropractor to better adjust the spine and joints.
Spinal and Joint Adjustments
In addition to the soft tissues of the body, a chiropractor is very well versed in the hard tissues of the spine and joints of the body. When these bones and joints become misaligned, other areas of the body can develop pain and cause the entire body to suffer. A healthy body begins with a healthy spine.
