Sleep Your Way To Better Back Health
By Stepy Kamei
It always feels great to wake up in the morning after you know you've gotten a really good night's rest, doesn't it? I think most of us can agree to this, and to the fact that it seems like getting a good night's rest is harder to achieve than many of us would care to admit. There are all kinds of reasons why we have trouble getting the quality and the quantity of sleep we need, and poor sleep can lead to a variety of health issues, unfortunately. These issues can range from increased stress, weight gain, headaches, and back pain. In fact, back pain and sleep issues are very often found by healthcare experts to be linked together in a negative cycle which compounds the problems a person may be having. Taking the proper steps to improve your sleeping habits can improve your energy levels and improve your back health, as well.
The Connection Between Sleep and Back Pain
If you've ever awakened and noticed a twinge in your back, you can assume that your sleeping habits may be at least partially to blame -- especially if your discomfort goes away as the day goes on. Even if you experience back pain but haven't before considered it, your sleep may be to blame; it's not a bad idea to consider adjusting a few aspects of your sleeping routine just to make sure.
Improving Your Sleeping Habits
First, consider the pillow(s) you're using. You may need to get a firmer one, or a softer one, or use less or more. Try adjusting these "settings" to see if you feel any better the next day.
You may also want to try a different sleeping position. Back sleepers should put a pillow under their knees; side sleepers should put a pillow between their knees; and sleeping on the stomach is the worst position, but if you do, place a pillow under the lower abdomen and pelvis.
