How Your Phone is Killing Your Neck
By Genevieve Cunningham
We are definitely a society that is obsessed with our phones. Any information or entertainment we could ever want is right in our back pocket. If you think about it, it’s pretty amazing. But, it’s also absolutely killing our health. Not only are we much more sedentary than we’ve ever been in history, but the constant use of phones is literally damaging our necks for good. Read on to find out how your phone may be killing your neck, followed by some great tips for improving health once again.
The Text Neck Phenomenon
Doctors are seeing so much damage from constant phone use they’ve coined it its very own term: Text neck. Because we spend so much time bent over our phones, our necks stay in a bent position for hours at a time. When patients come in to the office and complain of pain, doctors are seeing the neck forming a curve … permanently. For obvious reasons, this causes tension and discomfort, and unless the phone use is stopped, the neck has an incredibly hard time reversing the damage.
Side Effects of Text Neck
Besides the actual curving of the neck, text neck brings about many other problems as well. Pain is a big one. Patients will find that stiffness and soreness just won’t go away. When they bend their necks, it hurts. And because it’s bent so often, it also hurts to straighten the neck. Some patients also complain of insomnia, as the neck can never fully relax and allow the body to fall asleep. Another big complaint is that of headaches. Because this phenomenon causes tension to build in the neck, it often builds until it reaches the base of the head, and then turns into monster-sized headaches.
What Can We Do?
The best course of action is to curb the phone use. We tend to spend hours and hours of our day texting, browsing Facebook, scrolling through Twitter, or getting lost in a Reddit spiral. While these definitely provide entertainment, are they really worth damage to your health? Putting down the phone in lieu of something active can help beat the phone addiction and begin making baby steps toward a healthier neck.
How Do We Balance?
Even though eliminating phone use is the best course of action, it’s not very realistic to think that all phone use will be eradicated. It won’t be, and that’s OK. Another way to help protect your neck is to get regular chiropractic care. Chiropractors can help properly align the spine, which helps to eliminate pain and tension, and negate some of the effects that come with the inevitable phone use. If this is a method that you would like to try, check out The Joint Chiropractic. At The Joint, getting care is easier than ever with walk-in visits and affordable pricing. Phone use is now a part of life, but with a quick trip to The Joint, you may be able to use your phone and protect the health of your neck at the same time.
