Better Health for Kids: You Can Do It With These Tips
By Genevieve Cunningham
Kids are, hands down, one of the best parts about life. They certainly test us sometimes, and they certainly keep us on our toes. But ultimately, we love them to death and only want what's best for them in the long run. But what does that mean? What exactly is best for them? While there are a million ways to enhance your children's lives, one of the best things that you can do for them is to teach them healthy habits. To get your kids moving toward better health, take a look at these tips that can help you help them.
Limit Screen Time
It's been said a million times before. You already know that too much screen time can be dangerous. But are you taking the dangers seriously? Screen time alters the brain of little ones. It makes them crave stimulation. It makes them agitated and irritable. If we want healthy kids, we must limit how much time they're spending in front of a screen. This helps maintain better mental health, and it also provides more opportunity for free play and movement throughout the day.
Break the Sugar Addiction
Of course kids love sugar! Sugar is delicious! Unfortunately, sugar is also addictive, bad for our teeth, and ultimately bad for gut health. Chances are good that your kids are already addicted. The key to breaking the addiction is to cut back slowly and be consistent. Start with obvious sugars -- donuts, sugary drinks, etc. Then slowly cut back on other things. Do you have to eliminate all sugar? Of course not. But limiting their consumption can help with weight gain, skin complexion, digestion, and many other aspects of their well-being.
Believe it or not, kids need and crave boundaries. They need something to push back against. They need to know what's appropriate and what's not. It's better for their long-term mental health as kids when they are given appropriate boundaries to help them navigate the world. Establish these boundaries early, and then keep them firmly in place. Even when the going gets tough, stick to the boundaries and your kids will be far better off -- physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Kids need help to become healthy creatures. They need guidance and direction. If you want your kids to be healthy, use these tips and set an example by being healthy yourself. With consistency and patience, you may be able to help your kids live their healthiest life now as well as long into the future.
