Avoid Injuries that Could Sour a Workout
By Tom Herrin
Anyone who wants to have gain from exercising really must go about it in the right way. Getting excited can help to encourage jumping in full speed ahead, but using caution and prudence as they follow their routine can make the effort much more rewarding. Taking steps that can help to avoid injuries is an important part of any successful program. It is not all that technical either. It simply requires some understanding of basic needs and some connection with one's own body. Whether the purpose is weight loss, building muscles, or improving flexibility, small things can go a long way.
Get Hydrated and Stay That Way
There can almost never be enough said about the need to drink water. Too many people drink all kinds of things other than water and expect good results. The best method is to drink plenty of water at every opportunity. If people will maintain good levels of water in their bodies, they will be better able to handle being hot and sweating. Water can be lost really fast when they are working out, particularly in the hotter and more humid areas. A person can be suffering the results of this water loss before they ever realize it. A good practice is to constantly replenish. That is before, during, and after a workout.
Be in Tune
When people listen to their bodies, they can learn a lot. Even though everyone has times in which they are tired, there is a big difference between being tired and ill. When they are in a condition that is less than good, they are much more likely to experience difficulties in a workout. Besides injuries, illnesses may disrupt the ability of the body to respond appropriately to exercise. Being in tune with one's own body requires practice at listening. When something seems wrong, it may well be.
Be Physical and Have Fun
One of the biggest problems experienced by many people as they try to be more physically active is that it becomes more of a chore than a pleasure. We really need to find things that we enjoy doing, but it may be even more important to make certain that we avoid injuries. Getting injured in the course of working out can take all the fun out of it and undo what progress has been made. I have had enough of those injuries to learn to use more caution. I try to find ways to constantly do better in that regard. It can make a difference.
