Learn How to Bounce Back and Forward

By Sandy Schroeder

In a fast moving, fairly chaotic world, most of us have to stay alert and often bounce back when life delivers challenges. If you can relate, as you juggle work, family and finances in a changing world, the art of resilience may become quite valuable to you.

Dr. Travis Bradberry, co-founder of TalentSmart, the agency that serves 75 percent of the Fortune 500 companies, took a look at this quality recently, outlining ways to make resilience work at home and on the job.

Here are some tips to help you keep your balance.

Get a grip on your situation - To bounce back quickly, you have to understand your world with all of its details and demands. Do an overview and then break out specifics that are needed to keep it running. Knowing you have all of this information will give you confidence to keep right on going.

Create a support network - Friends and family are valuable people. Stay in touch and reach out to them for questions on problems and a comforting shoulder to lean on when the day is long.

Practice thankfulness - In spite of all of the frustrations and demands, when we look around most of us can see a lot to be grateful for. Friends, family, home, work and health are all very precious things. Be glad they are there and do everything to keep all of them in play. The stronger they are the better off you will be.

Put strong habits to work - Create work habits that help you handle your projects and deadlines. Look at your schedule and find ways to make it flow. It's much easier to bounce back from a setback if your schedule is working well. Then you can shift a few things and deal with any new developments.

Find ways to erase stress - People with resiliency know how to take care of their physical and mental health. Find ways to stay calm and focused. Use breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, tai chi, music, or hobbies to let go of tension and stay effective.

Learn to be stable and flexible - Make sure you have a solid base for your activities at home and at work. Then leave a little room to be flexible for all of the inevitable changes and demands that will pop up. With a little extra time and space you can absorb new problems and keep right on going.
