How a Short Leg Can Cause Headaches

By Debra Rodzinak

Did you know that a dysfunction in the neck can cause a headache?  There are three nerves that innervate the head and can cause pain that leads to a headache.  Neck posture is important to overall health.  When a person has a slouched posture, the head reacts by pulling the muscles of the back, neck, and shoulders -- and the constant pull of these muscles can lead to your temporal discomfort.  However, other spinal problems can also lead to a headache.

Spinal Alignment

A chiropractor will look at the patient’s entire spinal alignment to determine if misalignments in other areas are leading to headaches.  For example, if a patient’s hips are misaligned, this can lead to a cascade effect that travels up the spine and leads to increased pressure on the neck and shoulders.  This increased pressure can ultimately lead to ... you guessed it, a headache.

Hip Alignment

Often, when the hips are shifted or out of alignment, one leg will be shorter than the other.  By evaluating the length of a patient’s legs, a chiropractor can determine the degree to which the hips are out of alignment.  Adjustments to the hips can help return proportionate length to the legs, which will give the upper body and head an overall healthier form.

Temporary Remedy

While the adjustments may take several visits to fully restore function, a chiropractor may suggest that a patient use a lift in the shoe of the leg that is shorter.  This temporary fix will allow the hips to realign and help with headaches and give the spine added stability.  Over time, as the chiropractic adjustments realign the spine and hips, the lift can be removed.

However, a shoe lift should not be seen as the cure.  Instead, it should be seen as a temporary fix until the spine is able to fully support the weight of the body and alignment is restored.  Once the spine and hips are in proper alignment, the body is better able to heal itself, posture is improved, and headaches often disappear.
