3 Tips to Remember When Setting Fitness Goals

As 2017 comes to a close, many will begin to consider resolutions to set for 2018. While some will have a laundry list of things to change or accomplish next year, professional life coaches would suggest a simplified short list can be more achievable than a lengthy one. When considering what to include on the final list, health and wellness professionals would have you remember to include at least one goal which concerns health and fitness. Some guidelines to keep in mind when determining goals to set can include:

  • Don’t expect too much
  • Allow for wiggle room
  • Fitness goals should include eating habits

Don’t Expect Too Much

It is easy to get lost in the idea of setting goals for self improvement for the new year. Many have high expectations. Setting goals that offer too drastic of a change in your current routine can be setting yourself up for failure. It is a much more wise choice to keep goals for the new year simple and smaller in terms of change. There is nothing stopping you from doing more, but if you cannot follow through with the drastic change, your goals will not be considered automatic failures. You just may find that smaller goals can help you stay successful.

Allow for Wiggle Room

You are not always going to feel like exercising. Nor are you going to always have the time. There may even be parties and gatherings which may put you off your fitness game. Do yourself a favor and set goals which allow for some wiggle room. This could be allowing for one day a month to be junk(ish) or even once a week. Allowing for some time off of your strict schedule can help you stay successful.

Fitness Goals Should Include Eating Habits

While exercise goals are great, when setting goals covering your fitness, personal trainers recommend goals which include eating habits. A goal focused on reducing junk food consumption is a great place to begin a path to a healthier you. If you have a super sweet tooth, it may be a good idea to set a limit to the number of sweets you indulge in each week.

Remember to set yourself up for success by keeping it simple. If you have never been successful in resolution setting, just select a couple of simple things you can handle. It can also be a good idea to have a plan for when times get tough or when you fall off the path. You can do it! Here’s to a happy and healthy 2018!
