Simple Steps to Appreciate the Good

It’s easy to get caught up in our own little existence, to become overwhelmed some days, or to feel as if we are carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. It’s easy to lose sight of what is really important when things seem to be going oh-so wrong. Days like that happen to all of us, and it’s OK to sit in those feelings we are experiencing for a short amount of time, but you certainly don’t want to take up residency. So when that occurs, it’s helpful to step back and take stock. Acknowledge what is good or what is going right, because keeping things in perspective and maintaining a positive attitude toward life are vital to your overall health.

Changing Your Perspective

It can certainly be difficult to see things in a different light when you are worried, hurting, or struggling to get through the week -- or even your day, for that matter -- but it definitely is not impossible. Here are some small suggestions on how to bring moments of joy into your life because, sometimes, a moment is all that is needed.

  • Appreciate the little things - Oftentimes, it feels many people in this world are trying to “keep up with the Joneses.” We want to have the latest, the biggest, and the best of everything, so it is no wonder that so many people are left unsatisfied most of the time. Instead of falling into this trap, try to notice and appreciate little things around you. Being in awe of the simplest things in life, or being grateful for what you have every day, can change how you look at things.
  • Make someone else smile - Rather than making life all about you, commit to taking time every day to focus on someone else. Be kind to those who enter your world, share a random act of kindness with a complete stranger, help without expectations of receiving anything in return, or simply compliment someone. Your actions and words may be just enough of what is needed to change the course of someone else’s day.
  • Develop your passion – Doing what you are passionate about has a way of slowing down time and bringing joy into your life. You may not love your career, but you should find some time to do what you are passionate about. It will help to bring love, confidence, and a renewed purpose to your days.
  • Embrace nature – Being outside has a way of slowing things down and humbling all of us. It has been shown to aid in relaxation while also sparking a natural curiosity. It helps to energize us, it gives us a second wind, and it helps encourage creativity. If your day is going downhill fast, put the brakes on it and head outdoors for a brisk walk. It’s incredible how much being outdoors changes things.

Of course, the bad is going to happen sometime or another; after all, that’s life. But by being present each and every day, and focusing on the good, the struggles you face may very well appear differently or could possibly even disappear.
