Staying Healthy for Summer
By Donna Stark
You definitely want to have the best summer ever and you probably have a ton of stuff already planned for you and the family, don't you? But in order to make the best out of all those picnics, swim parties, concerts, and vacations, you are going to need to stay healthy and fit. How much fun do you think that amusement park is going to be if you are in pain and can't even walk? I'll tell you. It's not going to be fun at all and you will probably end up cursing yourself for planning a day like that to begin with. I think it is safe to say that you do not want a summer filled with pain or illness, so take these steps to keep yourself well!
Stay Hydrated
It doesn't matter where you live or what climate you are visiting, you have to keep yourself hydrated! So be sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, and if you are planning on spending an extended amount of time in the great outdoors, pack extra water. Don't underestimate the amount of water you need. It is vital that you and your family stay a step ahead of dehydration and heat illnesses.
Protect Yourself
The sun is more powerful than you think, so be sure to apply sunscreen before enjoying the day ahead of you. Whether you are heading to the beach, visiting a new city, or just relaxing at a park, you'll need to protect yourself. Don't forget to reapply throughout the day too!
Get Moving
Just because it is summer doesn't mean your fitness routine should go on vacation too. Take advantage of the great weather and turn your workouts into fun activities! Hit the trails for a hike, pull your bike out of storage, swim some extra laps at the pool, or join a community sports league. The options are endless!
Love Your Feet
Summer is a time for flip-flops, but it can also be a time for pain. If you want to let your little toes breathe, choose a sandal that has a thick sole, firm arch, and good traction. Shoes that offer little to no support can lead to poor posture, joint dysfunctions, and pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back.
Hit the Market
There is nothing better than farm-fresh produce and your local farmers market is sure to be filled with it during this time of year! So take advantage of all that goodness and increase the number of nutrients you fill your body with by shopping local and eating clean!
Commit to Wellness
Summer is definitely the season of vacations, but don't take a vacation from your overall wellness! It's important to maintain your healthy lifestyle habits so that you can enjoy all of your favorite activities. So go ahead and keep those roller coasters in your plans! It's going to be a great day!
