Burnout: How to Avoid It

By Sara Butler

The World Health Organization agrees: Burnout is a very real danger to people. As unmanaged stress caused by the endless emails, bottomless to-do lists, and demanding bosses, burnout can and does have an impact on your health. That's why it's essential to identify if burnout is an issue for you and how you can manage it better. You can take control of workplace stress by utilizing a few of these tips in your life.

Sleep Well

You need to sleep in order to be able to function and your body needs sleep to rest and repair. Not getting enough because you simply can't turn off your overstressed brain at night is a serious problem that can have a huge impact on your health and wellness.

Try to institute a healthy sleep routine that helps you to get to sleep at night and stay that way. Turn off all electronic devices at least an hour before bed. You should also make sure your room is dark and cool so you can fall asleep faster. If you need help turning off your brain before bed, then try doing a little relaxing yoga or meditation to help you relax.

Eat Right

Eating a healthy diet is one way to ensure that you're providing your body with the building blocks it needs to be healthy. A healthy body is a body that can more easily cope with daily stress, instead of being stressed out further by the stuff you're eating! Make sure you have whole grains, lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.

Exercise

Another way to help manage your daily stress load is to exercise. You don't have to go into full Rocky Balboa training mode to reap the benefits either. Doing something as simple as walking 20 minutes per day can have a huge impact on your health and wellness as well as ensuring that your body has a healthy outlet for stress.

Get Comfortable

Being physically comfortable can have a huge impact on your health as well as your stress levels. That's why it's vital to set up your workspace comfortably. Make sure you have a proper chair to support your body as you work, that your computer is at the right level so you don't have to constantly look down, and that the things you use most often are within easy reaching distance.

Be proactive about avoiding burnout so you can stay happy and healthy!
