Why You Should Consider Planting a Garden
By Genevieve Cunningham
Once upon a time, everyone had a garden. It was the only way to ensure you had food all year long. Of course, in our modern world, this is no longer necessary. Because of huge farms, we're all supplied with food all year round. And we love this convenience! But maybe we should consider planting a garden anyway. As it turns out, it may be good for our health! If you would like a fun and productive way to stay well, take a look at why you should consider planting a garden this year.
For Food
One of the best reasons to plant a garden is to be able to eat the food. Growing your own food can be incredibly satisfying. You literally create life for yourself, and it feels like such an accomplishment. This gives you the opportunity to choose what you grow, eat completely natural foods, and to eat clean. If you like this idea, then growing a small garden is for you.
For Mental Health
Gardens are good for mental health. Why? Because it's nature. And it's productive. And plants begin to feel like friends. When we grow a garden and it's successful, it makes us feel proud. It makes us feel powerful. And these feelings, along with the feelings of companionship that we get from our living garden, make for better mental health overall. It's no secret that people find gardens to be a source of happiness. Join the club and feel better about yourself and your mental health.
For Physical Activity
Gardens are hard work! Don't let that scare you off, but let it encourage you even more. If you plant a garden, you'll be burning calories and working your muscles every day. It's a great way to get in a workout without actually worrying over gym time or joining a class. It's a natural workout, and it definitely works. If you like the idea of working out without working out, why not do it with a productive garden?
If you've never tried to grow a garden, make this your year. It's satisfying and it can improve your health too. Pick a few foods, make a small space, and get after it. You may be surprised to find that you truly enjoy the process, and that you enjoy the better health that comes right along with it.
