How to Build Energy in the Mornings
By Genevieve Cunningham
The mornings are great. The sun is just coming up, the world is quiet, and we all have a chance to restart. Of course, most of us don't feel quite so positive in the mornings. We often spend our mornings grouchy, exhausted, and in a rush. Fun, right? But what if the mornings didn't have to be so full of fatigue and irritability? What if we could actually use our mornings to build energy and get ready for the day? Luckily, we can! If you're anxious to get your mornings started off right, take a look at these tips for changing your routine -- and your attitude -- before your day begins.
Skip the Snooze
The snooze button seems nice, but it's actually bad for your morning energy. When we press snooze, we're allowing our bodies to get back into a light state of sleep. When we wake up a second (or third or fourth) time, we won't be as alert. We'll be sleepier than if we would have just gotten out of bed when we first awoke. If you're guilty of hitting snooze, start with eliminating this habit and see if you begin to feel better in the morning.
Go Slowly
Rushing around in the mornings is really bad for our mood. It makes us more stressed, raises blood pressure, and causes irritability. Instead, take the morning routine very slowly. Enjoy your coffee. Read a chapter from a book. Enjoy your hot shower. You'll have to wake up on time -- or maybe even a little earlier -- in order to truly slow down, but the effects on your day will definitely be worth it.
Do a Stretch or Gentle Exercise
A gentle stretch or an exercise routine can help get your blood pumping in the morning. It can wake you up. It can actually boost your energy. Find an easy routine that you can roll out of bed and do first thing. Even a simple stretching routine will work! Moving your body is a great way to start the day, and over time, it may prove useful to your energy reserve as well.
You're not stuck hating your mornings for the rest of your life. Even if mornings aren't your favorite time of day right now, you can definitely turn it around. Use these tips to make your mornings a little better, and enjoy better energy -- and a much better mood -- for the rest of the day.
