Should Healthy People Drink Wine?

Wine is like the adult's version of sugar or candy. While kids might ask for a candy bar every day, many adults reach for a simple glass of wine. It helps them relax and wind down. For the most part, we don't really give this little habit much thought. It can't be that bad for us, right? But the truth is that alcohol isn't the healthiest option. So what do we do? Can we drink wine without guilt? Or should we cut back and find a new vice? If you like to kick back with a glass of white or red, take a look at the ins and outs of wine drinking for the average person.
The Dangers of Wine Consumption
Any alcoholic drink comes with a few risks. For some people, there's a risk of addiction. Alcohol has a way of making us feel relaxed. It can make the day's stress melt away. If we rely too heavily on this, it can lead to an overdependence on alcohol and an eventual addiction. But there are other risks as well. Alcohol can dehydrate the body. If you choose to enjoy a little wine, make sure that you're staying well hydrated. Too many drinks can also lead to headaches, impaired judgment, and insomnia. The key? Moderation. With moderation, we lower these risks and protect our health.
The Rule of Moderation
What exactly does moderation mean? Though this can differ from person to person, moderate wine consumption is generally defined as one glass per day. Drinking more than one glass per day comes with greater risk. And it's even better if your one glass is of the red wine variety. Research suggests that one glass of red wine per day (or less frequently, but not more) may actually be good for the body because of its high level of antioxidants.
The Potential Benefits
Besides giving your body powerful antioxidants, red wine consumption has been linked to a healthier heart -- though the consumption has to remain at a low level. But when used responsibly in moderation, wine consumption may also help you wind down -- which can then lower your stress levels leading to a massive boost in overall health. It may also lead to less body inflammation and promote longevity. While excessive wine can be detrimental to health, just the right amount may prove beneficial.
Can you drink wine? If you do it responsibly, it might actually be a good choice! Of course, the decision is extremely personal and any questions will need to be discussed with a doctor or healthcare professional. But if you get the green light, go for moderation and you may be able to enjoy this downtime habit for years to come.
