5 Self-Care Strategies for Writers, Desk Jockeys
By Brandi Swieter
Freelance writers and other desk jockeys who work long hours sitting in front of a screen should all take the time for self care. Work cannot get accomplished as desired if a person is feeling sore, overwhelmed, tired, and just plain unable to focus on the tasks at hand. With these five self-care strategies, freelance writers can take the time they need to refocus and continue working as intended.
Take Regular Breaks
Sitting for long periods of time, and staring at the screen for long periods of time, are both highly frowned upon by health professionals. Freelancers and others should be sure to take regular breaks away from their screens and their chairs so they can give their eyes a rest and get up and stretch to benefit the body.
Stretch After Work
While stretching in between sessions is ideal, it is also important to stretch after work is completed for the day. If a desk jockey has spent the majority of their day sitting, he or she should stretch in the opposite manner to improve circulation. Lie on the floor with the legs against a wall to help this. It is also important to stretch the back and neck by leaning backwards, as they were most likely slouched forward in front of the computer.
Stay Hydrated
Too many desk jockeys work for hours on end rushing to meet deadlines, often without drinking much other than perhaps coffee to keep them awake. While it’s fine to have a glass or two each day, too much caffeine can produce harmful effects. Stay hydrated by drinking as much water as possible during the day.
Set Work Hours
A 9-to-5 job may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it does have its benefits. People who work these hours only have to work these hours. They don’t stay past their scheduled time to still get things done. Freelancers often think they’ll have more time for life outside of work, yet spend hours upon hours working each day. Setting work hours, or at least designating how many hours of each day should get spent on work, is a good way to help make sure life is being lived.
Stand While Writing
To avoid the problems that sitting for too long can bring, writers should vow to stand more while writing. With the help of a standing desk, this can be done easily. Just be aware that standing for long periods can cause pain as well, and be sure to alternate between sitting and standing for the best experience.
Utilize these self-care strategies to stay on track while working. Those who do suffer from chronic pain because of their job can seek the help of a chiropractor in addition to following these tips. Visit The Joint Chiropractic at one of their many locations to receive an assessment.
