How Chiropractors Can Solve Your Migraine Problems

Migraines are a huge pain – literally! For those that are long time migraine sufferers, you know that popping a few pills will not always do the trick to getting pain-free again. Instead, a visit to a chiropractor could help. Yes, a “back doctor” can be the solution to your migraine problems!

It is still a mystery to what exactly causes migraines, though it is believed that it is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. This imbalance is often times caused by food or hormones, among other triggers, which is why those who suffer from food allergies will often get migraines or headaches after they eat a food they are allergic too. When the trigger is set off, blood vessels dilate in the brain, and then those vessels become inflamed and irritate surrounding nerves.

Psychology Today shared about a 2006 study done saying, “A study from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, Minnesota, compared chiropractic manipulation with amitriptyline, an antidepressant commonly used to treat migraines. The study found that chiropractic healing was about as successful as the drug”.

An antidepressant was commonly used to regulate the imbalances of the brain for migraine sufferers, and the study showed that the natural care of a chiropractor was almost as successful. What the study doesn’t show is that chiropractic care does not have a long list of side effects that many drugs have. Also, always take in consideration the cost and time factors too, such as the cost of the drug and doctor visits versus a chiropractor visit or the time taken to see relief from the drugs versus the instant relief many patients feel when they are adjusted.

Chiropractors believe that many migraines and headaches can be caused by a misaligned spine. When your spine is not properly aligned, the rest of your body suffers. In the case of migraine pain, a misaligned spine could be irritating the nerves the run from the spine to the brain. The article says, “This misalignment makes a person more prone to chemical imbalances in the brain.”

For those who suffer from severe pain from migraines and headaches, there is a solution. Get adjusted to see if that helps the pain. It may take more than one session to help you feel better. Also, monitor your food intake, taking note when you get a migraine and tracing it back to the last item you ate or drank.
