Holiday Mental Health: Your Go-To List

By Genevieve Cunningham

Keeping your mental health in check is more important now than ever. The holidays tend to bring on a lot of stress and chaos, and this can be damaging to our long-term mental well-being. Luckily there are steps that you can take to preserve your mental wellness through the hustle and bustle. Take a look at these tips for managing your health now, into the season, and long into the new year.

Accept Others for Who They Are

This is a time when we will be surrounded by friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, we don’t always see eye-to-eye with our family members. But if you want to keep your mental health in check, you’ll learn to let little disagreements go. Now is a great time to accept other people for who they are. Your aunt loves to play her nighttime music incredibly loud in the room next to yours? Put in some ear plugs. Your grandfather has a penchant for saying slightly inappropriate things? Ignore him. Just accept others, quirks and all, and keep in mind that you probably have your own set of quirks to bring to the table. Go in with this mindset, and you’ll likely leave with less stress and a greater command of your mental health.

Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself

We’re supposed to think of everyone else at this time of year, but don’t forget that you count too. If you need some time alone or out of the house, take it! If you need a quick run or a massage or a night with your best friend to ease tension, don’t feel bad about it. If you take care of yourself, you’ll protect your mental well-being and likely be able to tolerate those around you with much more patience and kindness.

Don’t Skip the Professional

It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is. If you need professional help, it is absolutely imperative that you seek it. Call your therapist, talk to a loved one, or reach out in whatever way you can. There is no shame in spending the time, money, or energy on your own personal wellness. And if a professional can guide you through the holidays with your mental and emotional well-being intact, then that is exactly what should be priority in your life.

More people begin to suffer from mental health problems around the holiday season than any other time of year. Don’t be afraid to take control and put your mental health first. Your happiness, your life, and your overall well-being count on your ability to be strong. Use these tips to make it through unscathed, and remember that greener pastures (and warmer weather!) are on the horizon.
