Three Vitamins to Prevent Hair Loss

By Randi Morse

Receding or thinning hair can be extremely stressful, especially for women. Men often deal with receding hairlines, or hair loss, as they age, usually due to an excessive amount of testosterone traveling to the scalp which then causes blockages in the hair follicles. One of the only plus sides for men is that they can easily shave their head without looking strange when they're out in public. Women, however, do not have that luxury. A woman who has thinning, or receding hair is quickly noticed in a crowd. There are several medical issues that can cause hair loss in women, but there are some vitamins that you can use to help prevent hair loss from occurring.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A helps cells to grow, including hair. When your diet has a lack of Vitamin A, hair loss may be one of the side effects. The tricky thing is that too much Vitamin A can also cause hair loss. Vitamin A can be found in vegetables such as carrots, spinach, pumpkin, and kale, so if you are eating a great amount of these types of vegetables, the excessive amount of Vitamin A may be contributing to hair problems. Vitamin A also helps the body to make sebum, an oily substance that helps to moisturize the scalp while also keeping your hair strong.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and also creates collagen, which is one of the basic building blocks of hair. Free radicals can cause serious issues with hair growth and may cause the hair to become brittle as well. Vitamin C can be found in items like citrus fruits, strawberries, and peppers.

Vitamin D

Research studies have shown that Vitamin D may be responsible for helping the body to create new hair follicles, which are the little places in your scalp where hair grows. People who have a low level of Vitamin D are at more risk to have alopecia, or hair loss. If you get outside, enjoy the sun you are being exposed to and its Vitamin D, but you can also find it in fatty fish and cod liver oil. While scientists do know that Vitamin D helps with hair growth, the actual science behind why it works is still a bit of a mystery.

Getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals in your diet is essential for a number of health reasons, but it is also important for cosmetic reasons. With the right balance of vitamins and minerals you not only will help avoid hair loss, you will also keep your skin happy and healthy.
