How Family Caregivers Can Reduce Stress

By Brandi Swieter

November is deemed National Family Caregivers Month. Family members responsible for caring for their loved ones know all too well about stress and the toll the job takes on one's mental health and well-being. Family caregivers need to reduce their stress levels by taking some time for themselves and finding other methods for eliminating the tension they've been feeling.

Join a Support Group

Countless people act responsible for a loved one. All of these people can join together in support groups in an effort to find some understanding, support, and guidance throughout the journey. Caring for another person, especially when they have limited mobility, difficulty handling even the most daily tasks, and perhaps trouble expressing themselves, is a tough job. Discussing issues with others who understand the stress of the job and getting advice on how to better manage can be a huge help and comfort.

Take a Day Away

It may be difficult to find alternative care for a loved one, but it can be done. Respite care is one possibility. Facilities are available that offer an almost daycare-like option for older adults who need someone to watch over them and ensure they're safe. This allows the caregiver to have a day away to themselves without having to worry about their responsibilities. Asking another family member or perhaps a family friend is also an option for some. No one should feel guilty about needing time to themselves to recuperate. It's important for mental health.

Find Time for Exercise

Exercising is a great way to reduce stress. Weight gain is a common symptom caregivers experience. It's easy to forget about taking care of yourself when you're so used to having to take care of another person instead. Finding time for exercise, even if that just means taking the stairs instead of the elevator or doing some stretching while handling a task, can greatly improve quality of life.

Get Regular Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care should be on every caregiver's list of stress-reducing methods. Many caregivers report feeling ill, pained, and otherwise unwell due to all the stress their job puts on their minds and bodies. Getting regular chiropractic care can help to alleviate some of that tension, improve the functioning of the immune system, and promote overall well-being.

Visit The Joint Chiropractic to discuss regular care. Their walk-in hours at their more than 425 locations ensure individuals needing care promptly can be seen at a time that is convenient for them.
