Age Well With Weight Training

By Tom Herrin

Growing older can be a fearful experience for many people.  It is a time in which we may lose some of our youthful abilities.  The things we once took for granted now become much more of a chore.  This doesn't have to be the case for everyone.  There are quite a few things we can do that may help to preserve us or even help us to improve.  Our state of mind plays a big role in our lives, and the old saying about being as young as you feel actually has some merit.  It has been found that weight training is not only possible for older adults, but it may go a long way toward turning back the clock, in some cases.

Minimize Muscle Loss

As we age, it is pretty widely known that we lose muscle.  While it may be a natural thing that is attributed to aging, it may also be partly due to the fact that we begin to think old.  In other words, we may have an image of ourselves that tells us that we are not capable of being as physically active as we once were.  Weight training has shown geat promise in helping to increase the metabolism.  This may help to burn fat and do a better job of utilizing the nutrients more effectively.  This means that they go to the right places.  This can not only help us to preserve muscle mass but also help us to avoid that soft, pudgy look.

Strengthen Bones

Another common issue associated with aging is a weakening of bones.  Some of this is because we may lose calcium, and bones may become more brittle.  Weight-bearing exercise is known to strengthen bones.  It can help with arthritis as well.  A can attest to this firsthand.  I have an arthritis problem in one shoulder.  When I stay in a good routine of working with weights, I can tell quite a difference.  My mobility seems to increase, and my pain seems to decrease.  If I don't stay on a good routine, however, I can tell the difference.

Sleep Better

Many older individuals commonly have problems with sleeping.  Studies  have shown that sleep quality is much better when people participate in weight training.  It appears that the sleep cycle is interrupted less and they are able to have a more restful and productive  sleep.  This is another thing that I can personally verify as I have experienced it with good success.
