Doing What Is in Your Power May Lengthen Life

By Tom Herrin

In a perfect world, we could control every facet of our lives.  That would include how long we lived, our health, and our prosperity.  Well, two out of three is not so bad.  The simple fact is that any of us has the ability to influence our health and longevity, at least, a little.  For years, many people have just accepted poorer health as a consequence of heredity or a situation in which we have little control.  In these days of greater knowledge and research, there are many things we can do that may help us to enjoy better health for a longer period of time.  We must be willing to make a few changes and be committed.

Treat Your Skin with Respect

It is often too easy to neglect proper care of our skin.  For sure, many people have tried to keep theirs smooth and soft, but they may have paid little attention to the need to protect it from the sun.  For many, seeking that perfect tan has been an ongoing pursuit that sometimes ignored better advice to take precautions.  Skin cancers are small, at times, but at other times they can be quite serious.  Using sunscreens today is a must.  Taking care to dress in a way to protect ourselves is critical.  Wearing long sleeves, when necessary, and having a hat with a sizable brim for protection can play a big part in helping us to live longer with few issues.

Move a Lot

Making a point to move as much as possible may be a real key to keeping us free from simply breaking down.  Movement can help us maintain our muscles, joints, and blood pressure.  Too much sitting may well be one of the surest ways to shorten our lives or decrease the quality.  Going for good walks or participating in quality exercise programs may help us to achieve our goal of staying healthier longer.  Finding a lifetime sport that we enjoy can be a good way to keep us motivated.

Make Sleep a Priority

For many of us, sleep seems to be an inconvenience.  It actually serves a major role in allowing our bodies to heal and rebuild.  Even though we may try to fit it in where we can, it will do much more for us if we get a fixed schedule that helps us to sleep better for an adequate amount of time.  It all becomes a big part of working towards that major objective.
