Swimming is a Great Exercise to Avoid Back Pain

By Virginia Laird

Most likely, you or someone you know suffers with back pain that gets in the way of some day-to-day activities. For millions across the nation, back pain is a burden preventing them the opportunity to enjoy exercise as well. Fortunately, there is one workout which can help reduce back pain. Swimming has long been deemed one of the best exercises for everyone, especially those who suffer with mild or chronic back pain. Chiropractors recommend swimming to patients as an alternative to hitting the gym because it offers great exercise while putting no strain on the spine. A few other reasons chiropractors recommend swimming, includes:

  • Swimming is zero impact
  • Swimming can be relaxing
  • Walking in the water takes weight off the back

Swimming is Zero-Impact

A low-impact workout is described as one which requires one foot to be on the ground at a time. Since swimming does not require any feet on the ground it is classified as a zero-impact exercise. This means there is little to no stress placed on the spine during the workout, allowing it to be pain-free.

Swimming Can be Relaxing

Swimming has long been said to be one of the most relaxing workouts. While taking in the peaceful serenity of the water, it can provide a calming effect to the body. Chiropractors recommend swimming not only for those who struggle with back pain, but also those who may need some stress relief. The water has a way of soothing the body and mind. Make sure you take full advantage of your local pool.

Walking in the Water Takes Weight Off of the Back

Maybe you are not a swimmer but would still like to enjoy the benefits of swimming. Walking in the water can be just as beneficial. Choosing to walk, rather than swim, does make it a low-impact workout. However, water helps lighten the load of gravity ,making the weight of the body almost disappear.

As the weather warms up, you may want to consider heading to the pool nearest you to begin swimming your way to a healthier you. Although you may feel like you can do it all the first day, it is best to start slow and add time in the water as you go. Good luck, and may you find your happy pain-free place in the warm water of the pool!
