Tips to Maintain Proper Spinal Alignment

By Alexis Mills

It's important to maintain our spinal alignment because when it is misaligned -- the joints are in a restricted position -- it leads to health issues, injuries and chronic pain. Losing proper alignment has much more of an effect on your body than most think. It starts to wear down the joints, affects how the brain communicates with the body, leads to abnormal movement, affects the immune system, and causes nerve interference. See how you can maintain and help your spinal alignment and avoid healthy issues.

Work on Your Posture

Keeping proper posture with shoulders back and standing up straight keeps the spine in alignment and strengthens the muscles. Once you have gained strength to hold good posture, it will actually take less energy to move, and less pressure on the shoulders, hips, knees and spine joints.

Do Stabilization Exercises

By doing stabilizing exercises, you will strengthen the core and, in effect, give your spine the support that it needs to stay aligned. Some exercises you can do are squats, push-ups, planks and lunges.

Do Yoga

The movements and postures of yoga balance the muscles and promote a healthy spine and prevent back injuries. Practicing yoga strengthens and calms the body. While it works the whole body, it also develops and supports the spine. Also, some yoga poses force you to have proper posture, which will help you strengthen the back and enable you to have that posture in everyday life.

Maintain A Healthy Weight

Keeping your weight down will decrease stress on joints and muscles. If you are overweight, it can impact the spine's alignment and create additional tension or stress in the back and shoulders. Plus, it's important to note that if you get to a healthy weight, it does not mean that your spine was healed in the process. The problem still needs to be addressed even if you lose extra weight and you have restricted joints.

Visit A Chiropractor

The best first step is to actually visit a chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic. By getting an examination, chiropractors will target specifically where your spine is restricted and be able to correct it. They can also give you a starting point for what you can do to fix it and achieve better posture. The chiropractors' focus is to restore and keep the spine in its proper place to allow the body to move freely and work optimally. It's important to note when a spinal restriction occurs, it doesn't necessarily present any symptoms, so it's important to get the review of the expert on spinal health and care.
