Preparedness Can Help In The Heat
By Tom Herrin
It is not uncommon for people to have serious difficulties when the temperatures begin to get hot. The dangers can be pretty serious. Failure to be properly prepared for the heat can be disastrous. Whether someone has a job that requires them to work outside, or they have simply chosen to participate in some outdoor activities, it is essential to have a plan that can be implemented from Day 1. A plan doesn’t necessarily have to be costly but needs to be practical. It can be a lifesaving part of any outdoor activity.
Water, Water, Water
There is no getting around the most basic need in the heat. That is water. Most people underestimate the rate at which they lose water when the temperatures are elevated. When the term water is used, it means just that. Other liquids may be anywhere from insufficient to damaging. Alcohol can cause dehydration. It should be avoided at all costs. Caffeinated drinks can also increase dehydration many times. While there are some good sports drinks available, they may act as a good supplement but cannot take the place of water.
Limit Activity
A good rule of thumb is to do as much outdoor activity as possible when the temperatures are cooler. That may mean early mornings or late afternoons. That will also depend on where someone lives. In the drier climates, late afternoons and evenings may work fine once the direct sun is not problem. In more humid climates, the air may not cool until well after midnight. In those areas, late afternoon may not work. Finding and using shade for those activities can increase the time someone can spend outside in any given activity. The most serious mistake many people make in the heat is trying to push just a little harder and being unable to have any means of recovering.
Choose The Right Clothing
The popular saying about clothes making the man can be translated into something pretty important in the heat. Proper clothing should be loose fitting, light colored, and lightweight. All this will allow better air circulation to cool the body. A good hat that provides maximum protection from the sun and cooling as well can complete the outfit. Adding sunshades can protect the eyes from the sun’s glare. Proper attire can be as critical in the heat as pads can be in a contact sport. It is great to be outside. In order to enjoy it to the fullest, be prepared.
