Children Need Holding Close
By Tom Herrin
All too often, kids become the low man on a lot of lists. Part of this is because many people simply take them for granted and fail to realize that their problems are every bit as real as any adults. When people have problems, they tend to take up the majority of their attention. Sometimes the problems kids have are dismissed as something that will pass. In order for anyone to enjoy good health, having good emotional health can be a big part. In adults, a worker who is distracted or under stress is more likely to have accidents or poor production. Children are the same way. If they are to be successful in school, they need to have a positive outlook.
Be Aware of Worry in Your Kids
People need to be keenly aware or the kinds of anxieties their children may be experiencing. Showing them the right kind of attention can be reassuring, which may be all it takes. It is important to take notice of anything that seems to be out of the ordinary or persistent. Excessive fears should be a reason for concern.
Be Aware of What Makes Kids Sad
Kids should be reasonably happy most of the time. If they are not, there is a reason. As a school principal, when I observed that a child demonstrated unusual sadness, there was something at the root of it that needed to be seen about. That child’s emotional situation was sure to affect his or her health. It was necessary to seek some kind of special attention for the situation.
All People Need Hugs Every Day
Most of us probably remember the story about the children who had been orphaned and suffered serious declining health that was found to be the result of a lack of human contact and affection. In one study from Carnegie Mellon University, 404 adults were observed for the correlation between a belief of social acceptance, hugs, and their health. It was found that those who seemed to believe they were more accepted were less likely to become ill with a cold. Many believe that hugging increases the release of oxytocin, which a hormone that is considered to increase bonding. This is also believed to help in maintaining better health. It is certainly worth a try. See what it does to those you come in contact with on a daily basis.
