Good Workouts Need Not Be Long

By Tom Herrin

Finding that right way to exercise without cutting into the rest of the day is always a challenge.  While most people think of longer sessions of activity as being the answer to their exercise problems, sometimes that kind of time is simply not available.  When this is the case, it leaves people searching for other options.  Even though they may feel that cutting their time equates to cutting their benefits, it is not always true.  If done right, some of those short sessions of exercise may produce the kind of results they seek without all of the time spent.  A little planning may make all the difference.

Run If You Will

Many people are runners.  They look forward to the opportunity to spend a good bit of time at each outing.  If the time is available, it can be great.  If they are a little short on time, there are some good options.  One of those is to simply reduce the time they spend running.  Some information released by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology revealed that in a study, those who ran for seven minutes per day on a regular basis cut their risk of death from heart disease by 45 percent.  Those are good results for a small investment of time.

Smile After a Workout

Not everyone gets excited about the idea of running.  For them, there are other kinds of exercise.  A Japanese study found that when people rode a stationary bike for 10 minutes per day, they were happier and better able to perform some activities that may challenge them mentally or with coordination and reaction.

Exercise Can Be Fun and Still Good

I always thought that, in order for me to get myself into better condition, I needed to give it all I had.  This meant spending a longer period of time working out.  It always seemed that it was the only way to get a real workout.  With the idea of those shorter bits of exercise, I can focus on what I feel is the greatest need and work on that.  This does not mean that I will lose any ground but simply that I can intensify my efforts on a few things.  Progress is what we all want to achieve.  After that, I want to be able to hold whatever gains I have made.  It may work for you as well.
