Are You Interested in Living Longer?

By Tom Herrin

Asking if anyone would like to live a longer life may seem like a bit of an odd question.  The perspective of all this often tends to change with time and events.  As we age and encounter various circumstances, many of us see life much differently.  Some of this is likely due to how our health seems to be holding up.  If we start now, there are some things most of us can do that may help us to have the opportunity to extend our lives and improve the quality.  For the most part, we simply need a plan.

Get Regular Sleep

As compared to much of the rest of the world, those of us in this country get less sleep.  This sleep deprivation can dramatically affect health.  If we want the opportunity to increase our potential life expectancy, we must address ways to increase the length of our sleep and the quality of it as well.  Some things we may do are establish a good schedule, avoid eating too late, keep the room free of distractions such as electronics.  Finding a way to wind down can help as well.

Enjoy Laughter

Many people just don't laugh enough.  Taking life too seriously can be asking for trouble.  Laughter can help us to release endorphins that can reduce depression.  One study found that laughter can help limit stress hormones, lower blood pressure, and boost immunity.  Too many times, we avoid situations in which laughter can improve our mood and change our outlook.  It may be an easy way to increase the length of our life while improving our relations with others.

Make Sure to Eat Healthy

It isn't too difficult to look for ways to make good choices about eating.  We all know we need to eat fruits and vegetables as well as good fiber.  Avoiding too many fast foods can help to trim fats and calories.  Watching carbs and desserts is always helpful.  If we simply inventory what we eat, we can likely improve on it.  Sometimes just keeping a good record can help us to manage anything better.  This can include diet.  Doing what we can to enjoy good health longer should be a mission for all of us, but it is generally worth the effort.  Choosing to give up the opportunity because we prefer some bad lifestyle choices seems a bit ridiculous.
