Tips for Working Out Without Burning Out

By Genevieve Cunningham

We all know that exercise is one of the best ways to improve our daily routine. But sometimes getting in a workout feels like a lot of work! Not only are we short on time, but most of us are a little short on motivation as well. And as it turns out, the way in which we approach these workouts may not be doing us any favors. If you want to jump on the workout bandwagon (and stay there!), take a look at these tips for working out without burning out.

Do Not Go Full Throttle

Far too many people take the all or nothing approach when it comes to exercise. They think if they aren’t running miles, lifting hundreds of pounds, or sweating a gallon, they must not be doing anything. This is simply not true! In fact, if this is the first workout, the only thing you’re probably doing is straining too hard and risking your ability to stick with it. Do yourself a huge favor and begin slowly. As your body becomes accustomed to the workouts, you can always add more intensity. But beginning with too much too soon will only tire you out, discourage your mind, and keep you from meeting your full potential.

Avoid Boredom

It doesn’t matter what exercise you begin with, it doesn’t mean that you’re stuck with this workout from here on out. Do not be afraid to change it up and keep it interesting. There is nothing wrong with switching from yoga to running to aerobics to swimming. This keeps the mind from getting bored, and at the same time, it challenges different muscle groups in the body. If boredom begins to creep in, try something new. Sometimes keeping it fresh is the perfect solution to beating workout burnout.

Allow for Some Slack

Guess what … it’s not the end of the world if you miss a day. It’s not even the end of the world if you miss a few days or a week. Just pick it back up again when you’re ready. Should pushing yourself be a part of the plan? Absolutely! Should beating yourself up about common mistakes be a part of the plan? Not at all. Allow yourself a few skip days, a little slack, and some mistakes. The more forgiving you are, the easier it is to get back on top of your game when the going gets tough.

Working out is absolutely important. Without a proper exercise plan, the body may get weak, soft, and overweight. But make sure that you go about working out the right way in order to avoid the natural burnout that often happens. Use these tips for a head start, and you may find this workout routine sticking around far longer than normal.
