How to Respond to Neck Pain

By Sara Butler

Neck pain happens. After all, the neck has a pretty big job to do with all that turning, bending, and the holding up of the head. Sometimes it just doesn’t work as smoothly as it should! When those times are upon you and you experience neck pain, what should you do? Here’s what the chiropractors at The Joint would do!

Timing

When neck pain strikes you need to take action immediately! This will help to promote recovery and get your neck back in working order sooner. Neck problems often manifest as:

  • Stiffness
  • Tender muscles
  • Tension or migraine headaches
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands

Any one of these symptoms should be evaluated by a chiropractor as soon as possible. Don’t let neck problems keep you from getting through your daily routine!

Get Some Rest

Rest isn’t recommended for every injury but in the case of neck pain, it’s a must. If you want to reduce the soreness you’re feeling and help to speed healing, then you need to make sure you take the pressure off the neck by resting it. Lay down for a bit and follow some of these other tips while you’re at it.

Stretch

Light stretching is called for when you’re experiencing neck pain or tenderness. You should never stretch to the point where it causes you more pain, but light stretching to keep the muscles from locking up is a great idea. A little massage as you stretch is probably a good idea, too.

Apply Ice and Heat

During the first 48 hours, ice is your neck’s best friend. Apply an ice pack to help relieve pain and inflammation. After the first 48, apply moist heat to help promote healing and increase circulation to the area. It’ll help with the stiffness, too.

See the Chiropractor!

You need to get in to see the chiropractors at The Joint as soon as possible after neck pain rears its ugly head. The chiropractor can find the root cause of your neck pain and take steps to address it so that it doesn’t happen again. Adjustments of the neck may be necessary for a full recovery but your chiropractor will know the best course of action to take!

The chiropractors at The Joint are committed to working with people who suffer from all kinds of issues and want to feel better. There is no pain or discomfort too small to be tackled by a chiropractor!
