How to Improve Your Workspace for Spinal Health
By Sara Butler
No matter how many hours you spend at work per week, it's important to make sure that your workspace is set up for health. That means more than simply wiping off your keyboard each day (that thing is full of germs!). It also means setting up a workspace that is friendly to your body and kind to your spine. Here are a few tips from the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic to help you improve the ergonomics of your office space.
At Your Desk
When you sit at a desk all day long, it can have a huge impact on the health of your spine. That's why you may want to consider getting a standing desk to use some of the time. These desks can help to maintain good posture by helping you to switch positions often. Consider spending part of the day at a standing desk and part of the day sitting, switching back and forth between the two. There are even desks that raise and lower to accommodate sitting or standing -- something to look into for your spinal health!
It's also important to make sure the things sitting on your desk are at the right level. The computer screen should be your biggest concern, as it must be at or just below eye level to keep from putting stress and strain on your neck, upper back, and shoulders. If you have a laptop, you can buy a laptop stand to help get it at the right height.
Invest in a Good Chair
The chair you sit in also has a big impact on your spinal health. You need to make sure your chair supports your arms, the height is adjustable, can swivel, and is comfortable, of course! This chair should allow you to comfortably sit for long periods and support your body properly in the process. But don't forget to set a reminder to get up and move around at least once each hour.
Get Good Accessories
If you haven't already invested in a few top-of-the-line ergonomic accessories, then it's time to do so. A mouse and keyboard that help support proper body positioning will help to relieve unnecessary stress and strain on your body. This will help to make you more comfortable throughout the day and less fatigued, too.
