Daily Habits: How to Improve Your Posture

By Sara Butler

Walking your dog, sitting at your desk, sleeping, and even watching television all have one thing in common: posture. You may not focus on your posture as you move through the activities of your day, but it should be something on your mind. That's because how you stand, sit, sleep, and move during the day can lead to issues if you're not careful. The chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic want you to focus more on your posture. Here's how.

Good Posture: What Does That Mean?

When you practice good posture, it doesn't mean you can walk with a book balanced on your head as you may have been taught by your grandmother. No, good posture simply means putting your body through the least amount of strain during your daily activities as possible. Proper posture supports the joints, bones, ligaments, and muscles throughout the day and is just one small element of the overall health of your body and spine.

What You Can Do

Better posture habits must be adopted when you're at home or work to improve your overall health and wellness. Don't limit your good posture to sitting and standing, though they are important too, but instead train your body to have better posture no matter what you're doing.

A few tips from the chiropractors at The Joint to help accomplish this include:

  • Watching television - It may be called Netflix and chill, but binge-watching television is anything but chill to your spine. Make sure you support your body as you sit or lay down with extra pillows. And get up to move around and stretch at least once per hour.
  • Sleeping - Who knew that how your body is supported when your unconscious could have such a big impact? No matter what position you sleep in, make sure to use pillows that are the correct thickness to support your neck and head as well as your legs and hips. The goal is to keep your spine in a neutral position all night long. If you need more information, the chiropractor is a great resource.
  • Shopping - Good posture is something that can be achieved anywhere! Try to notice how you hold your body when standing in line at the store. Are you slouching? How far apart are your feet? Where are you balancing your weight? If you can train yourself to notice how you move and stand during everyday activities, then you can make good posture a habit.

If you have questions about posture, the chiropractors at The Joint are an excellent resource!
