How to Bring the Vacation Home
By Genevieve Smith
It’s easy to fall into patterns and feel like you’re stuck in a rut. Going on vacation can break that monotony, but is it the only way? What if you could bring the principles of the vacation to your day-to-day life? Leaving your routine for a week of variety brings new experiences, new perspectives, and a feeling that life is exciting, not to mention the nourishment and extra rest.
Bring the Vacation Home
The world itself becomes no less interesting when you’re caught up in your usual schedule, it’s just easier to tune out. Let’s look into how to bring the daily excitement of life back into focus.
-
Get more sleep - How are you supposed to enjoy each day if you’re sleep deprived? Organize your life to strive for eight hours of sleep per night. You’ll be more alert, in a stabilized and more positive mood, and be better prepared to dine healthier.
-
Eat mindfully - When away from tight schedules and multitasking, one tends to eat more consciously, taking time to enjoy a meal. Stress can also inspire poor food choices, from those of the high sugar to the deep-fried variety. Prep a meal, make healthier choices, and carve out time to enjoy your nutrition rather than slamming it down on the run! If you’re eating out on a lunch break from work, consider ordering food ahead of time by calling in, to maximize the relaxing time you have away from the office.
-
Leave stress at the door - It’s easy to take work home with you. What with the ping-ing and buzzing, cell phones remind us of things far away from home. Whether you work from the office or at home, create hours that you’re on, and hours that you’re without-a-doubt off.
-
Get up and get out - One of the best parts of vacationing is exploring. All that adventure is exercise that one rarely even notices! Set a goal to go for a brisk walk for half an hour each day. Explore new neighborhoods, new walking paths, or new parts of the city. Not only will you feel the excitement of seeing something with fresh eyes, but mood boosting hormones like adrenaline and serotonin will be released from your increased heart rate.
Finding a way to rediscover the vacation at home is the key to sustained joy. Get rest to stay open to your surroundings, eat well to stabilize your mood, set boundaries for work time, and get exploring!
