Keeping Your Spine Healthy During Online School

By Donna Stark

School may not be back to in-person yet, but it is definitely back in session and with that, comes some potential back pain for our favorite teachers. Computer screens have replaced whiteboards, sitting has replaced movement, and slouched shoulders have replaced good posture, and we all know what happens then, don't we? Back pain steps in and replaces those pain-free days so many people have come to enjoy. You know as well as everyone else that when back pain rears its ugly head, it's harder to do your job. So, if you are a teacher (or even if you aren't but are working remotely from home), take a look at the following suggestions on how to reduce the risk of future discomfort. Being proactive with your daily posture now could make all the difference in the world later on!

Improve Your Sitting Posture

Poor posture is one of the leading causes of back pain, but it is also one of the easiest fixes you can make. Here are some tips on how to sit correctly.

  • Distribute your body weight evenly on both hips
  • Bend your knees at a right angle
  • Place your feet squarely
  • Adjust the height of your chair and desk so you can sit comfortably
  • Keep your shoulders relaxed and pulled back

Improve Your Standing Posture

Don't make the mistake of focusing on your posture only when you are sitting. You need to transfer those healthy habits to the times when you stand too. Here are some tips to check out.

  • Stand up straight and tall
  • Hold your head straight and in a neutral position (watch for tech neck!)
  • Position your ankles, knees, hips, and shoulders on top of the other
  • Distribute your body weight evenly
  • Don't lock your knees

Spend Time Stretching

Stretching is a great way to prepare for your body for the day ahead so be sure to give yourself plenty of time in the morning to do so. Start with the larger muscle groups and work your way around the body. Be sure to stretch slowly and don't bounce! We don't want any injuries here, do we?

Endless Days

The days ahead may seem extra long and hard but that doesn't mean they need to wreak havoc on your spine. Take the necessary precautions, focus on your posture, and get to work! There's a lot to do but you've got this. And if you still find yourself dealing with pain and discomfort, head on in to see your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic. They will always have your back!
