How to Make the Most of Your Days Off
By Genevieve Cunningham
Everyone looks forward to having a few days off. We work and work, and too often, we completely skip the rest and relaxation part of life. But these days -- the rest days -- matter. They matter to work happiness and our health in general. But if we're going to take these days off, then it's important to get the most from them. So how do we do that? If you're taking a few days off, take a look at these tips for getting the most benefit for your body and mind before going back to the daily grind.
Stick to the Routine
It's tempting to sleep in and stay up late on days off, but try to resist the temptation. Instead, try to stick to your schedule. You might get an extra 20 or 30 minutes of sleep, and that's OK, but don't venture too far off the path. If you do, you'll feel extra thrown off when you have to go back. Instead, get up and enjoy the slow pace of the day. Enjoy coffee longer. Stay in your pajamas for a little longer. The closer you stick to your schedule, the easier it's going to be on your body and mind when you go back.
Do Something Relaxing
Make sure that your day off has some kind of relaxing element. Maybe you get up and read a book. Maybe you get a massage. Maybe you lounge all day. Even if you only get to relax for a few minutes, make sure that you're taking the time. If you rush and run around on your day off, you won't be getting the refresher you need to go back to work healthier.
Keep Work at Work
Some people take the day off and then think about work all day. Don't do this. Instead, leave work where it belongs: at work. Your days off should be for you or your family or any other aspect of your personal time. Don't worry about what's waiting for you. Just relax and deal with work when you get there tomorrow.
Get Fresh Air
Try to get a little fresh air while you're off work. This is good for your lungs and your skin and your brain. It helps calm your nerves and improves both relaxation and concentration. Even if you only get outside for a few minutes, spend a few minutes with nature before heading back to the office.
It's important to take days off. It's important to rest and relax and refresh yourself. Use these tips to make the most of your days off, and you'll feel happier, healthier, and more productive when you head back to your everyday life.
