3 Ways to Keep Your Leg Muscles Strong

By Genevieve Cunningham

The legs are full of muscles. Between holding us in an upright position, walking, and moving about in general, we actually work these muscles quite a bit. But even with constant use, most of us actually need to work these muscles even more. We need to strengthen them. We need them to be healthy and capable for years and years to come! So how do we do this? With intention. If you're interested in keeping your leg muscles strong, take a look at these tips to incorporate into your normal routine starting today.

Lift Heavy

Your leg muscles are big muscles. They can handle a lot of weight, and so, make sure that you're lifting heavy weights. Does this mean bodybuilder type weights? Not at all. It means to make sure that the weight is challenging. This will break down the muscles, challenge them, and allow them to rebuild even bigger and stronger. If you're new to lifting weights, make sure to ask a professional for help with form and technique to prevent injury.

Ride a Bicycle

Bicycles work the bottom half of the body almost exclusively. The constant pedaling and the challenge of the ride force the muscles to really work. Those who ride regularly often find their leg muscles become more tone, much stronger, and have more stamina. For bonus points, riding a bike can also improve overall endurance, challenge the lungs -- and it's a ton of fun!

Jump, Jump, Jump

Jumping is a fast, powerful movement that demands the legs use massive energy. It's a great workout for the legs! To get in a jumping workout, consider doing jumping jacks, jumping rope, or adding jump squats to your routine. Or you can put a target on a wall and go for some old-fashioned vertical jumps. It all works! The key with jumping will be to protect the knees. Land softly with slightly bent knees, and always stop or ask for help immediately if you feel any pain.

The legs are a very important part of your body. You need them to stay fit and healthy. You need them for movement and activity. Overall, we just need our legs to be strong and capable. Use these exercises to keep your legs strong, and enjoy the boost to your health that comes along with it.
